Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles included two episodes on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. Her parents, however, didn't want her to perform until she turned older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry states that she did not want to become an actor during highschool but decided to start performing as a form of social interaction during her time at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry began her career in New York after graduation, landing minor role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry come back to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she was a part of her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. She was also cast in the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. The part was offered an audition to the actress, regardless of the fact that she was a cousin with the character.
